Launching Pad

Each month, SBA Music features an up & coming Australian artist or act.  It's our way of showing our support for local talent, and to inform our network and friends about great home grown music.

This months feature artist: Parades

August 2010

Parades are a young art rock band from Sydney who wisely choose to create their own music with no outside input or interference.  Featuring Dan Cunningham, Tim Jenkins, Michael Scarpin and Jonathan Boulet – Parades’ debut album Foreign Tapes is out now via Dot Dash Recordings.

The album is expansive and ambitious; a haze of pop harmonies, post rock guitars and electronic meanderings.  Drum Media did a great job describing the band when they said: “Parades create their homely tunes in a garage in Sydney’s Northwest, but it might as well be Iceland or the moon. They have an ethereal, expansive sound that is sweet and understated.”

Since their inception, Parades have pulled the main support for Malcolm Middleton in just their third show, Jebediah in their eighth and an NYE slot on the annual Peats Ridge Festival. Since their first show in April '08 they've been given heady comparisons to Explosions in the Sky, Radiohead, Fugazi, The Postal Service and Sigur Ros.

Even without saying it themselves, it is clear that this is a group of young individuals aching to be considered alongside exceptional bands rather than indie or new wave revivalist ones. Someone once said, that if a band is not playing at the edge of their abilities at all times, they should be playing something else...Or something to that effect.

"These guys are fantastic. Simple as that."
- RICHARD KINGSMILL, TRIPLE J
